ELEMENTARY LEVEL
At the Greenfield Day School, the emphasis is on adequate and meaningful instruction for each individual child. Small class size enables teachers to discover children's individual needs and develop area-specific objectives necessary for success in each grade.

Language Arts: This area is at the center of our quality academic curriculum. Being exposed to classic and contemporary literature, writing well, and expressing oneself orally are vital components of our program. Incorporating vocabulary development and comprehension in the other content areas is a primary goal of our Language Arts curriculum. Phonics skills and instruction are essential and are included, to varying degrees. Spelling rules are reinforced in conjunction with other aspects of curriculum. The elements of legible handwriting are also taught.

Mathematics: Our Math Program is enhanced with a great variety of manipulative and effective practice opportunities. Problem solving techniques, mental math strategies are also emphasized. Hands on activities provide, not only kinesthetic and visual reinforcement for those students requiring those learning modalities, but also act as tremendous motivators.

Social Studies: Starting in their early years, students are introduced to the environment around them and gradually that environment is expanded to incorporate a better understanding of our past, present and future. Multidisciplinary activities provide a way to integrate Social Studies content into other curriculum areas.

Science: The focus of our Science curriculum is to tap the interest and enthusiasm of our students to explore the world around us. Physical, Earth and Life Science are included in each level's course of study, as well as Health, Safety, and Drug Awareness. Students are encouraged to hypothesize, investigate, test, conclude and share their results. Hands-on-Science Lab provides tremendous motivation in the study of the sciences. Students are encouraged to "touch everything" and explore the environment "hands-on." Each student achieves success and benefits from these experiences, regardless of academic ability.

The horizons of our students are expanded by their participation in a variety of specialties classes. They are exposed to Reading Lab, Art, Computer Lab, Music theory and appreciation , Physical Education, Science Lab and Library Media Center. In Kindergarten, Creative movement is added to their curriculum. The Elementary Program includes applied Music and Art Appreciation as well.
